Beirut is once again the center for regional offices of a number of international organizations. UNESCO offices have already moved to Beirut. In 1997, the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) with its more than 300 employees moved to the Beirut Central District (BCD). The ESCWA building contains all the necessary services and amenities to house these international organizations.
